Civil Suits
The civil jurisdiction of the justice of the peace court is concurrent with the district court in most cases where the amount in dispute does not exceed $5,000.00, not including court costs, attorney's fees, or interest. The filing fee for civil matters is $130. The justice of the peace court cannot handle matters such as divorces, custody, adoptions, real estate, or restraining orders. If you have a question about filing a civil suit, please do not hesitate to contact the court.
